How to check into a hotel without tying up your card

Handing your card to the front desk means more than paying for your room — it usually means a chunk of your credit or cash gets frozen for the length of your stay, and sometimes well after. Here's how to check in without that happening.

Handing your card to the front desk means more than paying for your room — it usually means a chunk of your credit or cash gets frozen for the length of your stay, and sometimes well after. Here's how to check in without that happening.

Why your card gets tied up at check-in

Most hotels place a hold on your card when you check in — an authorization for the room rate plus a buffer (often $50–$200 per night) to cover anything you might charge to the room. It's meant to protect the hotel, not to charge you anything upfront. But it still locks up that money or credit for the length of your stay, and often for days afterward.

Options that reduce the impact

  • Pay in cash where accepted. Some hotels will take a cash deposit instead of a card hold, refundable at checkout. Not all properties offer this.
  • Use a credit card, not debit. A hold on a credit card eats into your limit; a hold on a debit card eats into your actual cash.
  • Ask about the exact hold amount. Some hotels will lower it on request, especially for shorter stays or loyalty members.
  • Bring a card with plenty of headroom so the hold doesn't crowd out other spending during your trip.

These are workarounds, not a fix — the hold still happens, it's just less painful.

Checking in with no hold at all

ClearHold replaces the hold with a single flat fee — $19.99 at Limited-Service hotels or $39.99 at Full-Service hotels — paid once at check-in. Nothing else gets frozen on your card.

If you want to spend money during your stay — room service, the minibar, valet — you do it from your phone, using money you've added to your ClearHold balance or your linked card. No handing your card to the desk, no hold appearing on your statement, no refund to track down after you're home.

It works at any US hotel, even if that property hasn't partnered with ClearHold — you can bring it with you.
